1965 National Service intake Bulli

By Phil Evans*

The first National Service intake in 1965 included a number of Bulli 20-year-olds.  Four are shown in the photo taken at Kapooka (Wagga Wagga) in September 1965 at the completion of their 10 week basic training. They are Roy Woods, Brian Farrar, Ted Towers and Phil Evans.

Each had attended Bulli High School and prior to being called up, Brian Farrar worked at the old Waters department store in Crown Street Wollongong; Ted towers worked at Radio 2WL and Phil Evans worked at Wollongong City Council. After basic training Farrar was posted to the Catering Corps, Towers to Signals Corps and Evans to the School of Military Engineering at Casula NSW.

There were a number of Bulli High School ex-students who also were conscripted during the period 1965 to 1972. Unfortunately there is no record of all the Bulli men who were called up.

In 1965 some 4,200 20-year-olds were called up as part of the first intake. Over the period 1965 to 1972, 63,000 20-year-olds were conscripted throughout Australia. With respect to the first ballot which was carried out on March 10, 1965 the birthdates of those called up were;

January 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 27, 28

February 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9,12, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26

March 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 20, 24, 26, 27, 28, 29,30

April 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 29

May 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 14, 19, 22, 23, 26, 30

June 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 20, 21, 25, 26, 29

* Phil Evans writes:  “I recently came across this old photo during a clean-up. It would be nice to have some record relating to the Bulli residents who were called up in the First National Service intake in 1965. I am sorry about the quality of the photo.  I hope it will reproduce. From 1945 until 1958 I lived in Stokes Lane Bulli behind the Family Hotel. We then moved to Godolphin Street Bulli Beach until I moved to WA in1979. I went to Bulli High School (1957 to 1960). From 1960 until 1979 I worked at Wollongong City Council first as a draftsman and later as a civil engineer.”
